What was life like before some of the electronic gadgets today?

For an assignment task I was asked to interview some one, in this case my mum, Mrs Maree Lea, about what life was like without things like ATM’s, mobile phones, Colour television and computers, and to record my results and write a conclusion.

Q1) what was life like before ATM’s and what did people use?
It was not as simple as it is today to use ATM’s and eftpos as a way to get money. Before ATM’s and eftpos people would have to go to a bank and see a teller to get money and they would give the teller a passbook or a bank book.

Q2) before mobile phones how did people contact each other quickly?
People would use public phones and would have home phones. Though not many people had home phones because they were happy writing letters or simply thought that it was to expansive.

Q3) what was it like before colour television?
If people had televisions they where black and white. When colour television was released in Australia is was very expansive so at first not many people bought them but eventually the prices went down and people bought them.

Q4) what did you do before computers?
Type writers where used often, also instead of E-mails telegrams where used as a form of quick messaging. Also some couriers where used to deliver important documents. Because there was no such thing as the internet the libraries where used for information and also the archives.

Q5) what do you think about today’s electronic gadgets?
Today’s technology has proved to be a great educational tool as well as helped create further advancements in technology itself. Though It has decreased jobs and it seems when there is a mistake made that there no longer is a person to blame it on because it is a computer error. Technology has also made people more lazy minded and also physically lazy they are also less in turned to there basic instincts, they now rely on there technology to find answers. It desensitizes people to violence and other atrocities, it enables corruption and even in the end as good as computers it seems that they cannot trace the information that is really needed. The internet can lead to invasion of privacy and can also make theft easier. The internet is this generation’s new drug.

My personal comment about technology
I think that technology has improved greatly and is very useful. I think that things like ATM’s, mobile phones, colour television and computers have just blended in and are used everyday and have become a way of life.
The technology used in these gadgets seems to improve more and more, there always seems to be a new mobile phone that looks better and can store more information or a computer that works faster and nowadays this is what people want have become used to. My family and I use most of these electronic gadgets at least once a day. Technology keeps getting better and faster.

Stop The Yelling!

When I was at school I remember being yelled at a lot and seeing other kids being yelled at. The other day I went to visit my sisters at school and watched a teacher yell at a little kid for doing something wrong. I couldn't help feeling sorry for the kid as he walked away nearly in tears.

Kids go to school to learn about things like Science, English and Maths but when did being polite fade out? Teachers constantly yell at children who are not their own and expect the children to respect them for it.

When a child goes to school and gets yelled at, a number of things can happen. The child can lose respect for the teacher, become embarrassed and ashamed of themselves, develop a low self esteem and can feel like they don't belong. Because the teachers who are meant to be their role models are doing this, they may feel that the teacher doesn't like them and therefore feel it is not worth participating in that particular subject.

Teachers yelling at their students happens often. So often in fact, that many people have become desensitized to it. So I have got a couple of scenarios for you.

1) A child in year seven is talking when the teacher is speaking and the teacher tells the student to stop twice then becomes annoyed and yells at the student and tells the student to get out of class. The student misses the rest of the lesson which is 30 minutes long. The student gets angry at the teacher because he was embarrassed in front of the whole class and doesn't want to go back to it. The child also doesn't like the teacher because of this and loses respect for the teacher.

2) A child in year seven is talking while the teacher is speaking and the teacher asks him to be quiet but the child doesn't, so the teacher asks the child nicely to wait outside for her. In a couple of minutes, the teachers goes outside and speaks to the child explaining how important it is to listen when she is speaking, then the child and the teacher go back inside. The child forms a respect because he felt he was being treated with respect and as an equal.

Which way do you think is the right way?

Look at it another way. If an adult yells at a child that is not their own, and doesn't know the child, the child's parents would be outraged and the police may even be called because what has occurred is verbal abuse.

How is this different from a teacher yelling at a student?

In many schools now they have put into play an anti-bullying policy, but when a teacher is yelling at a student why is that not seen as bullying? The teacher belittles the child and the child is not allowed to speak back and have their say. That is not a conversation or disagreement, that is the teacher overpowering the child.

"Hurt people, hurt people" Bill Crosby once said . Meaning that people that are bullied or feel that they have been bullied, often bully others perpetuating a cycle of violence. Stop The Yelling!
